The Jamaica to Toronto project was the brainchild of the boys from “Light in the Attic” label based in Seattle Washington. This innovative group of young males have a history of finding a long-lost gems of music and reissuing them to a grateful audience, music of long ago artists such as The Super Furry Animals, Madlib, and Karen O of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs..
Then one day, a brain wave struck the LITA boys. How about locating some nostalgic reggae music from the likes of Jamaican-born Wayne McGhie, a singer-songwriter who effortlessly blends the sounds of reggae, soul, and R&B, and creating a CD on memorable Jamaican oldies? The boys agreed this was a boss idea, and began searching for Wayne. After having difficulty locating this great artist, LITA turned to Jay Douglas for help. It was Jay who found Wayne, and was also able to find other long forgotten artists like Bob & Wisdom, The Mighty Pope, Lloyd Delpratt, some members of the Sheiks band, and others.
With Jay's input, and lots of hard searching and digging, the boys from LITA began smiling when a pile of old beat up sounds from these forgotten musicians, an old 45 here, an old piece of tape there, began to dribble in, one at a time. The LITA boys then had these closeted items dusted off and revamped by high-tech recording studios in Los Angeles, USA. Using top notch people, LITA had the music from these relic recordings burned on a CD and placed inside a crafty designed jacket entitled, “Jamaica To Toronto.”
This magnificent piece of work was released through a massive show on Toronto's prestigious Harbour Front Centre stage in July 2006. Jay Douglas and his AllStars, including a host of the lost Jamaican musicians resurrected through the support of LITA, rocked the mass audience of 5000, seated and standing on the edge of Lake Ontario, that fine summer evening. The CD was internationally released, and the day after the performance, sales took off in cities as far as Europe and Asia. The CD can be purchased in record shops across Canada and the USA.
Since then, the “Jamaica To Toronto” show has been performed in Vancouver to a sold out crowd of 8,000, and is slated to be performed again in Montreal on March 1, 2008.
